Scientists Find Fastest-Spinning Star In The Universe, Does One Rotation In 25 Seconds

Imagine living on a planet that spins every 25 seconds. While we don’t know if such a planet could harbour life, scientists have now found the fastest-spinning star in the universe known to mankind.

For perspective, our Earth spins takes 24 hours to complete one rotation or spin. This is almost always decided by the size of the planet/star and its centre. With a 25 second spinning cycle, the elusive star named “LAMOST J0240+1952” broke the previous record of 30 seconds held by “HD 49798”.

The star in question is situated 2,000 light-years away and is a white dwarf, i.e., it is essentially dead. White dwarfs are dead stars that once resembled the characteristics of our Sun. Such types of stars also have very strong gravity. Even small objects thrown from short distances would travel extremely fast near this star.

Why is it spinning so fast?

The universe is a giant dark canvas of chemical reactions and physical forces. The white dwarf received its fast-spinning characteristics from a nearby red dwarf star. Red dwarf are the most common stars in the Milky Way. This relevant red dwarf revolves around the white dwarf.

Gas from the red dwarf is powering the white dwarf. Gas from the red dwarf is causing the white dwarf to spin so fast in panic. The fastest-spinning star known to mankind was discovered on August 7 by Ingrid Pelisoli from the University of Warwick in England, as revealed on arXiv.org.

he team recorded a repetitive blip of light from the strange duo in space. The same light kept appearing 24.93 seconds. Based on this, they found that the star was performing a rotation every 25 seconds.
