green hydrogen car

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that he has bought a car that will run on green hydrogen produced at Faridabad’s oil research institute for a pilot project.

Gadkari on Thursday said that he envisions to “create value from waste” and is planning to use green hydrogen to run buses, trucks, and cars in Indian cities.

Addressing the sixth National Summit on Financial Inclusion, Gadkari said, “I have a plan to run buses, trucks and cars on green hydrogen that would be produced using sewage water and solid waste in cities.”

“Create value from waste”

“I am trying to create value from waste,” he added.

The Union Minister, in an attempt to “make people believe” that vehicles can ply on hydrogen extracted from wastewater, said, “I’ve bought a pilot project car that would run on green hydrogen produced in an oil research institute in Faridabad. I would take a ride of the city to make people believe…”

Last month, while addressing the an event organised by industry body Indian Chamber of Commerce(ICC), Gadkari had said that green hydrogen is the future, he said, “I am going to buy a car next month, which will run on hydrogen.”

He had further said he is also trying to encourage use of 50 per cent ethanol in aviation fuel.

“We are encouraging (adoption of) electric vehicles (EVs), and (use) of alternative fuels like ethanol, bio-LNG, green hydrogen…(But) we are not going to stop anything (ICE vehicles),” he said.

The road transport and highways minister noted that the sale of EVs has increased as people are giving good response.

“I feel that we don’t need to make anything (ICE vehicles)mandatory,” Gadkari added.

Many startups working on it

He pointed out that 250 startups are working on e-vehicles and this will reduce the cost of EVs.

Observing that India is becoming the largest EV market for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and cars,” he said, “In the next 5 years, it is planned to develop wayside amenities at 600 locations, all of which will have the necessary EV charging infrastructure.”
