4 South Mumbai homes filled with inspiring design and good vibes

A Warm, Minimal Family Home by ns*a architecture

This home for a family of three is designed by Shruti Jalan and Neesha Alwani of ns*a architecture and interiors. “The family was clear they wanted a cosy home with large, airy spaces,” Jalan says. The client also wanted to do away with clutter—both physical and visual, and emphasise more on clean, neat and minimally treated spaces. “This was an exercise in renovation design. The previous, existing layout had too much space given to the utility areas and far too less to the living. The windows were small too. So, we agreed to combine programs and open up spaces to the outside,” Jalan says. The resulting design encourages conversation and quiet time between the family and doubles up as a formal entertainment zone when required.

An Apartment that Reconfigures Spaces With Colours, by Karan Desai

Familiarity and admiration for his contemporary aesthetic and tasteful design sensibility led the homeowners to hand over the design reigns to the Mumbai-based designer, Karan Desai for their sixth floor house in a Mumbai sky-soarer. Desai had 1,500-square-feet of space to work with, which was great. The flipside was the living room—longer than it was wider, and a bit “like a train bogie”. The big question then was how to “compartmentalise the functions without creating walls/ barriers and yet aesthetically have them separated so that each space has its own identity”. Along with that were the largely RCC walls of the space, which meant room for resizing was radically reduced. The solution lay in some clever manoeuvring within given constraints and client requirements (for three master bedrooms, living, dining and den areas and a pride of place for the family mandir). And that involved smartly dividing spaces—and the unusual choice of blue. In turns bold and understated, tranquil and sophisticated, this south Mumbai home performs an effortless balancing act between good looks and clever function.

A Bachelor Pad With 360-degree Views of the City, by Jason Wadhwani

Jason Wadhwani of Jason Wadhwani Design Studio was tasked with converting a 4,200-square-feet apartment in one of South Mumbai’s high-rises, into a bachelor pad. The client, a businessman and a polo player who had spent a large part of his life in New York wanted the apartment to exude a New York penthouse aesthetic. “The space had to be conducive for entertaining, yet have a tranquil quality. This is why, a lot of the spaces like the bar and the living areas as well as the two outdoor decks were created and designed for people to mingle and socialise,” adds Wadhwani. With overwhelming views of the South Mumbai skyline from every room, the apartment holds an inherently captivating quality. Naturally, this became an important factor to consider and spaces were conceptualised accordingly. “The layout and placement of furniture were all worked around the beautiful 360-degree views that the apartment offers,” Wadhwani explains.

An Apartment That Offers Panoramic Views of the City, by We Design Studio

The M house, a private residence, is situated on the 30th floor of a high-rise in South Mumbai and has an unobstructed view of the Mahalaxmi racecourse and the sea beyond. The entrance to the apartment is through a private lift lobby that leads to a large, square living and dining space flanked by the master suite on one side and the family room/den, two children’s bedrooms and utilities section on the other side. We Design Studio’s Saahil Parikh and Nupur Shah’s approach to the design of the apartment focused in equal measure on the functionality required from each space—as detailed by the client—as well as the design aesthetic they envisioned: cozy, lived-in, and Asian. The architect-duo cleverly employed patterns, textures and wood finishes to craft a distinct palette that blends old-world charm with a modern appeal.
